Del Monte Cannery, San Jose, Califoria.
This factory is the last vestige of the
Santa Clara Valley's agricultural past.
Long before this plant was shut down the
orchards that produced the fruit for the
cannery had moved out to the Central Valley
area of California. Now this factory will
rejoin the orchards as its equipment and
some of its people have been moved to
Modesto. This colorful machine was
extremely corroded due to the caustic lye
that circulated through it. Drenching fruit
in lye is a fast way to remove the peels.
